This week, NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay took the Retail Means Jobs road show to the Lone Star State – where one in four Texas jobs – more than 3 million jobs total -is supported by retail.
More than 60 retail and business executives, including event co-host Kip Tindell, CEO and Chairman of The Container Store, were on hand for a frank conversation on retail’s public policy priorities and how to engage in the next phase of the campaign to change public perception about retail.
Mr. Shay emphasized how NRF is engaging retailers, consumers, suppliers and policymakers on retail’s public policy priorities. These priorities include shutting down the sales tax loophole that unfairly hurts brick-and-mortar retailers, reforming our burdensome visa system to encourage more foreign shoppers, and generating bipartisan support for upgrading our aging transportation system.
Texas retailers, which include the likes of The Container Store, GameStop, JC Penney, Michael’s, RadioShack and Zales provide 16 percent of the state’s GDP. In fact, the Houston area is home to over 170,000 retail jobs – making it one of the most retail-supported regions in the country.
At the event, Shay called on the executives to join the effort – highlighting both the Retail Means Jobs campaign and success of the “This is Retail” video contest . “We have the ability to collectively help get our economy moving,” Shay said.
