At the Store Systems study presented on Tuesday by members of ARTS, RIS News, and the IHL Group, one of the main priorities of retailers in 2009 identified by Greg Buzek, founder and president of IHL, was the focus on store execution. In fact, the name of the report was “The Execution Imperative.” Retailers can’t continue to spend billions of dollars annually on advertising and planning systems to attract customers to their stores only to see their plans underachieve due to poor store execution. Execution systems are a good thing to have when the market is thriving, but they are imperative in a down economy.
The report notes that solutions such as integrated labor scheduling and task management allow retailers to put the right people in the right time with the right skillset and confirm employees actually do the job as expected. It also notes that in the next 2 years, 29 percent of retailers surveyed plan to add Task Management to improve store-level execution.
Also at the show, a major book retailer announced it is implementing LS, TM, compliance, and KPI monitoring tools from Reflexis in order to control labor costs while ensuring their employees are doing the most important things first.
2009 has been a particularly tough year for retailers and retail brokers and as a business writer I have great admiration for those who have managed to tough it through these times. This is all by way of saying that I am looking forward to the 2010 Convention and Expo. Having attended this expo as a journalist for many years I have been pleased with the consistent content of the seminars that allows all attendees to come away with real meat, i.e., great ideas they can begin applying to their businesses immediately. Heaven knows that in 2010, everyone will need an abundance of great ideas.
